Deconstruction of the opening scene of The Vampire Diaries Opening-Pilot episode:
The vampire diaries is a Supernatural, Mystery series with a hint of romance. Its by far my all time favorite show that I've watched maybe a million time. I how the writers are continuous with the story line and the show has a new antagonist to deal with every season without it getting boring. I love the vfx in this show, the sound effects, the mise-en-scenes and have I mentioned the story line?. So this is my breakdown of its opening scene.
Scene 1 (0 :00-O: 13)
The scene starts with the voice over of Stefan the protagonist telling the viewers that he's a vampire that sets the main theme of the show of Stefan the protagonist while showing a Forest at night covered with fog that shows the mystical elements of the show and slow and almost unheard suspenseful music playing in the background that gets louder as the screen turns to black and the music stops. This is to signify the mysterious setting of the show.
Scene 2 (0: 13-0-22)
As the screen turns to black he tells the audience that he's a vampire and this is his story signifying that he's the main character. As the screen is still black a background song starts as the view is now shifted from the forest to the road besides it. The camera follows a car driving and the song that started playing in the black scene is the song playing in the car ride.
Scene 3 (0: 22- 0: 43)
The scene shifts from the car to the couple sitting inside the car as there's background music playing in the car in a low volume so we can hear what the couple is talking about. The scene shifts the the backshot of the car driving into fog.
Scene 4( 0: 44-0: 55)
The women sitting in the car looks away from the man driving the car to the front and points out " what's up with the fog" to which the guy replies that it will go away and as they driving in the fog their car hits a man. and they swerve off to the side if the road. As the car hits the road we can hear the sound of the car's glass breaking the man hitting the car with force and the sound of tires screeching as they swerve. And suspenseful music playing in the background.
Scene 5 (0: 56-1:25)
The scene turns to the couple in the car panicking and the guy tells her to call for help while he goes to check out the person who got hit by their car. As he's walking there is suspenseful music in the background along with the sound of an owl hooting and the sound of his footsteps can be heard. This is to create a slightly horror tension to symbolise that there's something going to happen. As the guy gets close to the man lying on the floor hoping he is alive the man attacks the guy from biting(showing that he's a vampire) and the scene goes to black .
Scene 6 (1: 26-2: 01)
The scene shifts to the women in the car after failing to get signals she gets out of the car to find her partner. Tension erupts as she can't seem to find him and tries to shout for him and ambient voices can be heard in the background of crickets and owls mixed with really low suspenseful music. She looks back as a thump of her partners body on the car is heard she screams in terror and tries to run away. As she's trying to run away the same creature that attacked her partner sweeps her off the ground. And the only thing left in the frame is the car. The screen fades into a black screen while the opening title of the the series( The Vampire Diaries) appear. This scene signifies the tone and enigma of the show.
