History and Evolution of Film

Films have come a long way throughout our time. From the black and white films we used to see in the late 19th century to the high quality production films we see today. This post is solely focused on breaking down the different eras of film and its overall history.

1. Early beginnings ( The late 1800's ):

The late 1800's gave us a first look at media as an art-form. In this era we'd see the Lumiere brothers host the first public movie screening in history. This was the greatest breakthrough in media history and would shape the art-form into what it is now.

2 . The silent film era ( 1890's - 1920's ):

This era was known as the silent film era renowned for the stop motion films that the industry moved towards. These were mostly black and white films with no sound with dialogue written on the screen. The story lines of these films often relied on the actors facial expressions and body language to convey the story due to the lack of dialogue.

3. The introduction of sound ( late 1920's ):

The next big step taken in the world of media was the addition of synchronous sound.

In 1927 to be particular The Jazz Singer Directed by Alan Crosland cemented itself as a major sound film bringing a new change in acting styles, story-telling and overall film production and also initialised the development of musicals and dialogue-driven films.

4. The Golden age of Hollywood ( 1950's ) :

During 1950's the film makers changed their film strategies. They started realism in movies for example using real location and real people. They started experimenting with different editing style. Directors gained more creative control where they used films to show to show their personal vision ,story telling and ideas.

5. New Hollywood and Rise of blockbuster( 1970's - 1980's) :

During the 1980's darker film themes were explored .Directors such as Steven Spielberg made popular  blockbuster films like Indiana Jones , Jaws , ET (Extraterrestrial) which ruled the box office and made way for films with similar ideas.

6. Digital Revolution and Contemporary Cinema (Modern day) :

Filmmakers started using using computer based technologies to create films. Using Visual Effects and Cgi to create realistic effects. This use of digital art can be used in different genre's such as sci- fi , horror or fantasy or animations. After 2010's Streaming platforms became more popular such as Netflix ,Prime and Disney+. This made releases accessible for global viewers.
